Women over 50, we’re not done.

Janine Allis left school at 16. She went on to build a global business empire.

Most of us know the headline. Janine founded Boost Juice and grew it from one Adelaide store into a brand with hundreds of stores around the world.

But I’m more interested in what came before the success.

There was no neat plan

Janine worked in advertising, managed a gym, travelled, became a nanny in France and even worked as a stewardess on David Bowie’s yacht.

It was not a straight career path. It was a woman trying things, learning as she went and collecting experiences along the way.

Then, in 2000, while raising a young family, she opened the first Boost Juice store.

What I love about her story is that she didn’t wait to feel completely qualified. She learnt by doing.

Why I chose Janine for this series

The whole reason I began The Reinvention Series is because I keep meeting women who feel they should have worked everything out by now.

I know that feeling.

I started Estetika at 50. I wasn’t starting with years of experience in the product industry. I was starting with an idea from my daughter Nina and the belief that I could make it real.

I knew design. I did not know manufacturing, ecommerce, international freight or just how many decisions sit behind one makeup bag.

Some days I feel confident. Other days I wonder what on earth I’m doing. That part doesn’t always make it into founder stories, but it’s true.

What I did know was that I wasn’t done. I still had something in me that I wanted to create.

Maybe you’re not done either

Your reinvention might have nothing to do with building a business.

It might be returning to work, taking the trip you keep postponing, learning something new or finally putting your own needs back on the list after years of looking after everybody else.

Women over 50 have not disappeared. We have experience, ideas and a very good sense of what we no longer want to waste our time on.

That is worth something. Maybe EVERYTHING.
